Nothing like a global pandemic and subsequent shut down to derail your last semester of grad school! One of my courses shifted the final video project into an opportunity to showcase the reality of life at the current moment in time. The difference just between March and May is wild to grasp, much less what the rest of the year will look like.

portrait: Selfies
In recent photo class adventures…self portraits. I started out not really looking forward to this project, but ended up having a ton of fun with it. I think I probably spent more time coordinating shirts, coffee mugs and other props than I did actually shooting or editing. It’s still strange to be in a photography class again, but having deadlines and stipulations keeps me on my toes for sure.
Without further ado, several gratuitous photos of myself!
experiment: Camera Obscura
In the midst of all my theory and reading heavy courses this semester, I’m getting the opportunity to take a studio class. It’s been interesting to get back into the swing of making photos with stipulations (and for a grade) again. Our first assignment centered around exploring the human body, and pinhole photography.
Just in case our neighbors didn’t think we were weirdos yet, I covered our bedroom window and got to work.
senior: Caleb
Caleb and I first met in middle school and in the 10+ years since then I've watched him go from a pre-teen poetry writer, to an amazing teacher, to earning not one, but two degrees. He recently graduated with a Masters in Counseling, and still has to take on a licensure exam and THREE THOUSAND HOURS of practice. If that doesn't sound like enough things to do, he did it all while teaching high school, and still found some time to buy a house.
I'm so glad we were able to sneak in a few moments to take some pictures in the new house, and have some lunch. Even though adult life is hard, and we definitely don't see each other as much as we did when we were 13, I'm still insanely proud. Can't wait to take another set of pictures when you decide you need a PhD! ;)
excursion: Cape Lookout
Last November during our trip up to Portland, we took a day to visit some water at Cape Lookout. Cold beaches beat warm beaches any day.
We got out there just in time to watch the tide come up and a storm roll in - needless to say it was the best. We got thoroughly (and happily) soaked and sand covered before heading to a tiny pub to warm up.
#hutchesatthedisco: Aftermath
These are definitely some of my favorite photos I took at the wedding. Who needs beautifully arranged flat lays when you can have evidence of that time you ordered pizza at midnight and gave the delivery guy wedding cake?! Also pictured: drinks for two people we love and miss dearly, one of the loves of my life/our wedding photographer Cynthia, and our day after breakfast picnic.
Find more wedding ramblings here!
lately: Field Work
I headed out to a senior portrait session the other day...low and behold, my tag-a-long assistant ended up getting his own shoot, too.
This guy recently became an ambassador for Shady Rays sunglasses, so of course he needed a nice picture to post before going to a tournament. Who knew that I would end up being an Instagram husband??
senior: DJ
Between the two of our crazy schedules, DJ and I only had about 30 minutes to make this shoot happen. Neither of us back down from a challenge, so we went for it!
It doesn't matter how many fellow Girl Scouts I take senior pictures for, I always think they're too young to be graduating. Even though they make me feel old, I'm always super proud. Congrats on everything, DJ! Hope you'll keep coming by my office to chat about life, even when you're a fancy college gal. ;)
senior: Miranda (part 2!)
Way back in 2013, I traipsed around in the snow with this girl to take her (high school) senior pictures. Now she's not only graduated again, but has already started law school.
Since those first pictures, she's become even more phenomenal as a human, and still insists on making me wander around with her in frigid temperatures for the sake of pictures. Keep it up, sister.
portrait: 2 Minute Headshots
It's always a good day when someone asks me to shoot portraits. It's even better getting asked to take 8 portraits.
It starts to get a little more interesting when the headshots need to be done in one day...and the weather is freezing...and the building you work in has terrible lighting and a bad paint job...and all 8 people have very different schedules...
But I'm nothing if not up for a challenge.
